The brief
Sam Wickham set up Later Life Retirement Planning in 2023 and designed its client documents himself in the early days. The firm has grown a lot since, with a good reputation and a new website on the way, but the proposal and suitability report hadn't kept up: they were plain Word files with long runs of text, read by clients whose average age is 67. The job was to bring them up to the standard of the firm and make them easy for an older client to read, without adding any time to how long an adviser takes to produce them.

The process
Five things a report template has to get right
LLRP's clients are 67 on average, and they read these documents while deciding what to do with their home. That's a lot to take in at any age, and small, crowded text makes it harder work than it needs to be.
I put the body text up a size and brought the columns in, because your eye loses its place on a long line when it swings back to find the start of the next one. I widened the margins, spaced out the lines and added clear headings, so a client can find the part they need without reading the whole thing.
More space means more pages, though, and a client who opens a long report full of text will feel they've been set homework. To break it up, the proposal walks through LLRP's process in six steps with a marker showing where the client is, key points sit in callout boxes, and the sections that stay the same for every client carry imagery, including the team's photo from their awards night.

We asked him to completely redesign two of the most important documents we provide to our clients - our Proposal and Suitability Report - and the end result has exceeded my expectations. He took the time to properly research our business, our market and, most importantly, the consumers who would actually be reading these documents. He considered everything from font choice and sizing through to spacing, layout, readability and the way information should be presented to an older demographic.
